Why do giraffes have a spotted coat? With such large animals, it seems unlikely that the spots would be a form of camouflage. Yet, this is correct. From a distance, a giraffe looks like a large tree. Despite the camouflaging spots on their coat, giraffes are not always safe from predators. However, they know how to defend themselves, as they can kick quite hard with their front legs. They prefer to do this when protecting young animals, as older animals are usually not easily attacked. Anyone who has the chance to view giraffes up close can easily distinguish the females from the males. They are slightly smaller and have thin horns with tufts of hair. The males, on the other hand, have thick horns with no hair at the tips.
