Today's parents do their homework. They read labels, look for certifications and ask questions about origin and materials. And that only makes sense, every parent wants the best for their child, right? Sustainable baby & kids products are increasingly becoming a basic expectation, and as a retailer you can play an important role in that. Here you'll find more about what sustainability actually means and how to respond to it smartly with your product range.

Safety: it starts with the materials
Babies and young children have more sensitive skin and a more vulnerable immune system. That's why parents increasingly choose clothing and other textiles made from natural fibers such as organic cotton, bamboo or linen.
Two labels you should definitely know as a retailer:
● The OEKO-TEX® label, which guarantees that textiles contain no harmful substances.
● The GOTS label, the international standard for organic and socially responsible textiles.
At Trademart you'll find brands that focus on this by nature, such as Timboo, which works exclusively with ecological bamboo textiles, and Jollein, which puts GOTS-certified cotton at the heart of its range.
Safety matters when it comes to toys, too. Toys offer plenty of fun, but they're just as important for a child's development. That's why the European Union has set strict standards (EN 71) to guarantee that safety. As a retailer, it's wise to buy toys from brands that demonstrably respect these standards and clearly communicate this on the packaging.
Made fairly: from production to shelf
Safe materials are one thing. But parents also want to know how and where a product is made. Who made it? Under what conditions? Belgian and European brands have a natural advantage here: shorter supply chains, stricter social legislation and more transparency. That information is always worth sharing with your customers.
Also good to know: Europe will anchor this even further. The Digital Product Passport (DPP), which will become mandatory in phases from 2027, gives every product a complete digital story via a QR code, from materials and origin to recycling. For you, this means more trust and customers who buy with peace of mind.
Built to last: sustainability as longevity
Finally, sustainability also means products that don't fall apart after a single season. Parents would rather invest once in quality than repeatedly in replacements.
Wooden toys are the category that stands the test of time par excellence, and they look great too, as with Moes, Little Dutch and Trixie Baby. But the grow-along furniture from Paidi or the four-season sleeping bags from Lodger are also interesting products for budget-conscious parents.
Disposable products are being used less and less, too. This is clear when it comes to tableware and drinkware. Just think of the popular water bottles in all their colors and sizes. There are plenty of other handy products that make parents' lives a little easier, such as silicone tableware sets and reusable snack boxes. Good for the environment and for the wallet, and that's a message that sells.
Because by consciously choosing products with a longer lifespan, your customers help reduce the mountain of waste. Synthetic materials such as plastic and polyester only break down after centuries. Alternatives made of wood, cotton or recycled materials are therefore definitely a good idea.
How do you respond to this as a retailer?
Having sustainability in your assortment is one thing. Conveying it to your customers is another. Here are a few concrete pointers:
● Communicate about certifications and materials. On the shelf, on your webshop, via social media. That's how you build trust.
● Build a curated range. You don't have to offer everything. A consciously composed assortment of brands that share your values comes across as more authentic.
● Use sustainability as a selling point. Quality, safety and longevity can help justify a higher price.
